How Does Globe Valve Work ?

A globe valve works by utilizing a movable disk and a stationary ring seat within a spherical body. When fluid enters the valve through the inlet port, it is directed towards the valve seat, centrally located in the body. The disk, attached to a stem, moves up and down in a linear motion to control the fluid flow.

In the closed position, the disk sits tightly against the seat, creating a seal that prevents fluid from passing through. As the valve opens, the disk is lifted off the seat, allowing fluid to flow through the narrow space between the disk and the seat. This movement enables precise throttling, as the flow rate can be adjusted by the position of the disk.

When fully open, the disk is entirely off the seat, allowing fluid to flow with minimal resistance. The stem, operated by a handwheel or actuator, controls the disk’s position. The flow direction is typically from under the seat to over the seat, providing efficient control and versatility in various applications, making globe valves ideal for throttling and frequent operation.

Globe Valve Main Components:

  • Body: The main structure that houses all the internal parts and connects to the pipeline. It is designed to withstand the pressure and temperature of the fluid.
  • Seat: The stationary part that forms a seal with the disk when the valve is closed. It ensures a tight shut-off to prevent leakage.
  • Disc: The movable component that regulates flow. It moves perpendicular to the seat, controlling the opening and closing of the valve.
  • Stem: Connects the handwheel or actuator to the disk. It transmits the motion needed to open or close the valve.
  • Bonnet: Attached to the body, it covers and protects the valve internals. It provides a leak-proof seal and allows access for maintenance and inspection.
  • Packing: Seals around the stem to prevent fluid leakage. It ensures the integrity of the valve during operation.
  • Handwheel/Actuator: Used to operate the stem and disk. A handwheel is manually operated, while an actuator provides automatic control.

Why Choose Globe Valve?

Precise Flow Control

Globe valves offer excellent throttling capabilities, allowing for precise control over flow rates.

Good Shutoff Capability

Globe valves provide a reliable seal, making them effective for stopping the flow of fluids. Suitable for applications where a tight shutoff is essential, such as in fuel systems and steam applications.

Reduced Wear and Tear

The seating design minimizes wear and tear on the valve components, leading to longer service life and lower maintenance costs.

Positive Seating

The design of the globe valve ensures a positive seat closure, reducing the risk of leakage. Critical in applications where leakage cannot be tolerated, such as in toxic or hazardous fluid handling.

Safety

The ability to precisely control flow reduces the risk of system overpressure and ensures safer operation in critical applications, especially in high-risk industries like chemical processing.

Versatile Design

They come in various configurations (angle, straight, and Y-pattern) to suit different installation requirements and operational needs, providing flexibility in design and application.

Energy Efficiency

Globe valves have a low pressure drop when fully open, which can contribute to energy savings in a system, making them efficient for long-term operation.

Smooth Operation

Globe valves have a linear motion, which allows for smooth and gradual operation, reducing the risk of water hammer and system shock during flow regulation.

Most Popular Questions for
GLOBE VALVE

  • Issue: Leakage around the stem due to worn packing.
  • Solution: Tighten the packing gland. If leakage persists, replace the packing with a new one.
  • Issue: Leakage from the bonnet joint.
  • Solution: Tighten the bonnet bolts. If this doesn't resolve the issue, replace the gasket and ensure the bonnet is properly aligned during reassembly.
